The Directors, who are non-executive, represent a diverse range of relevant experience including: finance legal criminal justice housing health children’s services business research and mental health Read more about our trustees' below Aideen D’Arcy MBE Extern Group Chair Having graduated from Queen’s University, Belfast with a BA, Aideen undertook an MSSc in management studies as well as gaining professional membership of the Chartered Institute of Housing and the Irish Council for Social Housing. A dynamic and highly experienced professional with over 30 years experience working in social housing at a senior level throughout Ireland, Aideen initiated a number of award-winning housing projects. She has a proven track record of working collaboratively with commissioners and communities to deliver positive change. Aideen has contributed to new thinking on housing and policy initiatives to deliver a diverse range of sustainable housing solutions offering quality, choice and best value. She has extensive experience in the strategic development and delivery of capital and asset management programmes. Within the homelessness sector throughout Ireland Aideen has endeavoured to deliver housing solutions both in a professional and voluntary capacity so that people can have a safe place to call home and a stake in their community. Aideen was awarded an MBE in the 2009 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to disadvantaged people. Stephen Leach Extern Group Director Stephen lives in North Down and was educated at Cambridge University. He joined the Civil Service in 1975 and worked in the Northern Ireland Office and other Departments. In 1990/91 he spent a year in the USA as a Humphrey Fulbright Fellow. Subsequently he was involved in the negotiations which led to the Good Friday Agreement; and from 2000 to 2009 he was the Chair of the Northern Ireland Criminal Justice Board. During this period he helped to implement a number of reforms including the establishment of the Youth Justice Agency, the Public Prosecution Service and the Criminal Justice Inspectorate, as well as the introduction of statutory restorative conferencing for young offenders, risk-based sentencing, and modernized sexual offences legislation. After retiring from the Civil Service in 2009, he was appointed as a Non-Executive Director of the Health and Social Care Board and served in this role for 11 years. He has also served as a Parole Commissioner and as the Northern Ireland Commissioner on the Criminal Cases Review Commission, based in Birmingham. He is married with three grown-up children. Ian McAvoy Extern Group Director Ian lives in Belfast and was educated at MCB and London University. After graduating in economics Ian studied accountancy. After a spell in practice, he became the Finance Director of a leading Irish brand and was promoted to Chief Executive, holding that position for 16 years. He has much expertise in strategic planning, transformation, finance and marketing. Ian was Chair of PlayBoard, Vice Chair of Sport NI, Director of Sport NI, and is presently Vice Chair of Ark Housing. He has a keen interest in rugby and football, initially as a player and now as an administrator, and holds the position of Chairman of Rugby at Queen's University, Belfast. He is married to Lynne with three grown-up children. Eavann Murphy Extern Group Director Born in Northern Ireland and living in Dublin since 1999. Studied HND Computer Science, Masters - Marketing Management and ACCA Diploma Accounting & Finance all at University of Ulster. Currently Managing Director for the Wholesale Division of eir Group and founding Chair of the eir Group Brand Council. Extensively corporate career working in Bank of Ireland, Northern Ireland 1988-2000 in various marketing and strategy roles and then in Telecommunications with Vodafone 2000-2014 and within the eir Group since 20015 managing key business units across consumer, business and public sector markets. Previously served on the Board of Governors for Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology. Completed the Institute of Directors Chartered Directors Diploma in 2021. Dr Joan Broder Extern Group Director Joan has over 40 years experience of developing, delivering and managing a range of services for adults, children and parents / carers across the island of Ireland. Upon leaving school, Joan took up a post with the Civil Service in Dublin before completing a degree in Social Administration. Joan subsequently held several positions including residential Social Worker, Director of Supporting Families and interim CEO of a charity. As a self-employed consultant Joan has experience of undertaking reviews, evaluations, tendering expertise, project management as well as acting as chair of the NI Degree in Social Work Partnership for a 5 year period. From 1978-1988 and 1992-2005 Joan was employed by Extern in the capacity of Project Leader, Project Manager and 10 years as Director of Services. Joan considers that her experience and strengths include: problem solving, tendering expertise, planning, motivating and partnership working with a strong value base. Joan served as Chair of Victim Support NI from 2017 to 2020. Mr Paul Doran Extern Group Director From 2018-2022 Paul held the post of Director of Rehabilitation and Reducing Reoffending with the NI Prison Service / DoJ with prior appointments including Director of Rehabilitation, Deputy Chief Probation Officer / Deputy Director [PBNI] and Assistant Chief Probation Officer [PBNI] from 1999 – 2018. From 1982 – 1999 Paul held various posts within the Probation Service in NI and London. Paul has obtained academic qualifications including: Advance Diploma in Management Practice, Masters in Social Work, Diploma in Social Studies and Bachelor of Social Science. Paul has published several publications in professional periodicals and journals related to his extensive experience within the Probation Service in NI, UK and Gibraltar. Stephen O'Boyle Extern Group Director Stephen is from Galway and attended NUI Galway where he studied Commence and went onto become a Fellow Member of Chartered Accountants Ireland having trained with of one of the big four Accountancy practices. Since then he has been living and working in Dublin in the banking sector for over 16 years across multiple roles including Corporate Banking, Credit, Retail Banking, Recovery, Strategy, Governance & Compliance and Mergers & Acquisitions. He is a Qualified Financial Advisor and Member of the Institute of Bankers of Ireland. Stephen has several years’ experience in lecturing in Accounting and Economics on a part time basis.
